As an experienced wallpaper wholesaler, Matex Tapeten Vertriebs GmbH supports specialist retailers, processors and online shops not only with high-quality products, but also with practical advice on processing.

1. Proper preparation – check the surface

A clean wall is the basis for consistently beautiful results.

The substrate should:

  • be dry, clean and load-bearing

  • It must be free of dust, grease, and old wallpaper residue.

  • It should be even and smoothly plastered.

  • Prime highly absorbent walls

Tip: A white pigmented wallpaper primer ensures even absorbency and prevents dark surfaces from showing through.

2. Calculate wallpaper requirements correctly

Before you start wallpapering, you should correctly determine the amount of wallpaper you need .

You will need:

  • Room perimeter (add up all wall lengths)

  • Room height (+ approx. 5 cm surcharge)

  • Roll dimensions (e.g. 10.05 m × 0.53 m for the Euro roll)

Important: Patterned wallpapers with a repeating pattern require more waste. Therefore, always plan for at least one spare roll .

3. Mix the paste correctly

Use the appropriate wallpaper paste for your type of wallpaper:

  • Non-woven wallpaper paste for non-woven wallpapers

  • Special adhesive for heavy vinyl wallpapers

  • Standard wallpaper paste for paper wallpapers

Stir the paste into cold water according to the manufacturer's instructions and allow it to swell.

4. Applying non-woven wallpaper – wall paste technique

Non-woven wallpapers are particularly popular because they do not require soaking time .

Here's how it works:

  1. Apply the paste directly to the wall.

  2. Insert dry wallpaper strip

  3. Press down with a spatula to ensure no bubbles form.

  4. Trim any excess material cleanly.

Advantages of non-woven wallpaper:

  • No soaking necessary

  • Dimensionally stable

  • Removable completely when dry

  • Fast and clean processing

5. How to properly hang paper wallpaper

For paper wallpapers, the paste is applied to the back of the wallpaper.

Important:
Allow 3-5 minutes of softening time – no longer, otherwise the embossing may be damaged.

Then, butt the strips together and press them down carefully.

6. Vinyl wallpapers & textured wallpapers

Vinyl wallpapers impress with their robust, washable surface. They are particularly durable and lightfast.

Depending on the substrate material, the processing is carried out as follows:

  • as non-woven wallpaper (wallcovering technique)

  • or as a paper carrier (with soaking time)

Textured wallpapers with a 3D effect are also washable and can even be painted over later.

7. Professionally installing photo wallpaper

Photo wallpapers (digital print wallpapers) usually consist of high-quality non-woven material and are processed like non-woven wallpapers.

The individual lanes are numbered and are fitted together precisely. It is essential that the first lane is perfectly vertical.

8. Seams and finishing

After wallpapering:

  • Check seams

  • Remove any remaining paste immediately

  • Allow the room to dry in a draft-free environment.

  • Do not set the heating to the highest setting.

This will help you avoid open seams or tension in the material.

Conclusion – The right technique leads to the perfect result

Those who carefully prepare the substrate, correctly calculate the wallpaper requirements and choose the appropriate processing technique will achieve professional results.
